T

eak is among the most valuable commercial

woods in the world. It is extremely strong,

exceedingly durable and ages gracefully and

beautifully. One of the widest selections of this

“king of the woods” is available at Outside Is In, located in

the heart of Mount Pleasant.

If you are looking for outdoor furniture that will stand

the test of time, your next stop should be Outside Is In

and its 6,500-square-foot showroom on Highway 17. The

business also features 2,500 square feet of outside display

space and offers a wide range of outdoor furniture, including

pieces created from reclaimed wood, synthetic resin and

aluminum. You’ll find furniture made of various woods,

such as mahogany, cumaru, ipe, tigerwood and garapa.

But at Outside Is In, premium A grade teak furniture,

imported from Indonesia, is the shining star.

“It’s the most stable of the commercially viable woods,

and that’s important as it helps the joints to hold up better

than other wood and allows the furniture to last much

longer,” said owner Bob Kelliher, who worked in the world

of IT before teak piqued

his interest. “If it’s good

quality teak from the

heartwood of a mature

teak tree, it doesn’t rot,

it doesn’t splinter and it

doesn’t attract termites.”

He added that people

love the color Teak turns

as it is exposed to the

rays of the sun. He said

the silver-gray patina is

“the preferred look.” He

noted, however, that those who purchase teak can decide

for themselves what they want their outdoor furniture to

look like.

“If you would rather maintain the original honey-gold

brown color, staining is an option,” Kelliher pointed out.

Regardless of how you decide your teak furniture will

age, you’ll have the option to consider a wide range of

outdoor items at Outside Is In, including tables, chairs,

sofas, benches, lounges, rockers, deck chairs, Adirondack

chairs, coffee tables, end tables and bars.

Outside Is In also carries items produced by Gloster,

the company that makes what is considered to be the finest

outdoor furniture in the world.

“We offer fantastic pricing on world-famous Gloster

furniture,” Kelliher said. “We have the lowest pricing you’ll

find anywhere.”

And you’ll have the advantage of dealing with a

business with the experience to help you find the outdoor

furniture that fits your needs.

“The quality of our product differentiates us, but so

does the fact that we do custom work, which you wouldn’t

find in a regular furniture store,” Kelliher commented.

“We’re not just a furniture merchandiser or woodworking

shop. We’re a furniture store that does customization and

services for its clients.”

“Between what we carry in stock and our custom work,

either by our own shop or our manufacturer in Indonesia,

we can provide our clients with a solution to their vision,

with very affordable pricing,” he added.

According to Kelliher, the outdoor furniture business

is thriving in the Lowcountry, in part because of the area’s

magnificent weather. He said local residents are focusing

on buying outdoor furniture for their patios, decks,

courtyards, porches and even their boats.

That’s why, he said, “The Outside Is In.”
