I love seeing my family outside, smelling burgers on the grill and sneaking a few extra treats when no one is looking. But I must admit, there’s one part of this holiday that isn’t exactly my favorite. FIREWORKS. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my two-legged family members, and I know they think fireworks are beautiful. But me and several of my pack friends get very anxious. To me fireworks make sounds like the sky is barking back. One minute I get less anxious and the next it seems like the world is blowing up around me, ending in a huge boom! I scramble for the nearest safe spot under the bed, or sometimes I run and hide in my buddy Bill’s shower or under the couch. Honestly, I seek out any place where I can feel safe. The good news is that my family knows exactly how to help. They are my buddy Bill’s family too, but on the Fourth of July I need help from everyone in the family because I’m a nervous wreck. They keep me inside, turn on the TV or some music to cover the noise and make sure I have plenty of toys and cozy blankets nearby. Sometimes they give me Benadryl and once something called Trazodone they had to get from the veterinarian. I don’t know what that was, but it put me out; I think it was July 6 before I could open my eyes. Most importantly, Bill and his family try to help me stay calm, which reassures me that everything is okay. After every Fourth of July I talk to my pack friends and many of my canine pals feel the same way. A little extra patience, a secure place to hide and lots of love can make a noisy night much less stressful. The fireworks only last for a little while, but the belly rubs, treats and cuddles can keep going all evening. Now that’s a celebration I can get behind! Until next time, keep your tails wagging, stay safe and don’t forget to give your favorite human a few extra kisses. They deserve them – especially if they share their hot dogs.
