For Mount Pleasant resident Candace Johnson and her three sons, the passing of their dog Waffles inspired a unique project that has become a source of comfort for pet lovers across the Lowcountry. Waffles was a familiar face in the neighborhood and had a special gift for bringing people together. After her loss, the Johnson family began searching for a meaningful way to honor her memory while helping others cope with the grief of losing their own cherished animal friend. That idea eventually took off and became the Mount Pleasant Paws Over the Rainbow Bridge, a memorial located near the Park West Recreation Fields. Completed in March 2026, Southern Lumber and Millwork provided the bridge materials for its construction. It now offers visitors a special place to leave a small tribute for pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Collars, tags, leashes and other keepsakes now hang from the structure, each representing a treasured companion and the memories they leave behind. What began as a personal family project quickly grew into a community effort. Friends, neighbors, local businesses and fellow animal lovers all played a role in bringing the memorial to life. Since its completion, the bridge has become a place where people gather to remember, reflect and share recollections of the pets that touched their lives. For Johnson, one of the most meaningful aspects of the project has been meeting visitors and hearing their stories. Through both in-person visits and posts shared on Instagram, the memorial continues to foster connection, healing and a celebration of the special bond between people and their pets.
