Our pets can struggle more than many owners realize. Unlike humans, dogs can’t cool themselves efficiently through sweating. Instead, they rely mostly on panting, which means even a short walk on a hot afternoon can become dangerous quickly. One of the biggest challenges for pet owners is that dogs often try to hide discomfort. They may continue walking, playing or following commands long after they’ve become overheated simply because they want to please their owners. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to subtle warning signs rather than waiting for the obvious indicators of distress. Early signs of overheating can include excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums, slowed movement, glassy eyes or seeking shade and lying down unexpectedly. In more serious cases, dogs may stumble, vomit or collapse. Flatfaced breeds like pugs and Frenchies (French bulldogs), senior dogs, puppies and overweight pets are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Veterinarians recommend walking dogs during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or after sunset, and sticking to shaded routes whenever possible. Hot pavement can also burn sensitive paw pads, so owners should test surfaces with the back of their hand before heading out. Carrying a collapsible water bowl and offering frequent water breaks can make a major difference during summer outings. A little extra caution goes a long way. Paying attention to a pet’s body language and adjusting routines amid heat waves can help keep furry family members safe, healthy and comfortable all summer long.
