45 www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.ILoveMountPleasant.com | www.BestofMP.com feature In 1898, the Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island Ferry Company was purchased by Joseph Lawrence who established a resort on the Isle of Palms. He renamed his venture the Charleston and Seashore Railroad Company. Trolley service to the islands was a major component of Lawrence’s company. Once passengers from the city disembarked at the foot of Hibben Street, they hopped onto a trolley which ran through the Village, crossing Cove Inlet to Sullivan’s Island via a trestle. The trolley then headed toward the Isle of Palms along Middle Street, merging with Railroad Avenue (now Jasper Boulevard) and stopping at various “stations” along the way. Another trestle spanned Breach Inlet, and the trolley ride ended at the hotel on the front beach. The entire trip took almost an hour with a fare of 25 cents. There were nine roundtrips a day. In 1913, the Charleston-Isle of Palms Traction Company, headed by James Sottile, purchased Lawrence’s business. Eleven years later, Sottile was forced into bankruptcy due to personal litigation and his company folded. Because East Cooper residents relied on the ferries, this meant there was no ferry service for several weeks until local government established the Cooper River Historical marker near Patriots Point.
