Wharves and slips in the Village and downtown were updated and new roads were built in Mount Pleasant. By 1927, the trolley trestles at both Cove Inlet and Breach Inlet were adapted for automobile use, and the trolley system was phased out. But ferries were still necessary to cross the Cooper River. When automobiles became widespread, ferries were adapted to carry them. In 1925 alone, 380,000 people and 32,000 automobiles used the ferry system. Within just two years, those numbers increased, adding 146,000 people and 68,000 more autos. Sottile’s company proposed a toll bridge spanning the river, although it didn’t come to pass at the time. In 1929, however, the idea became a reality with the opening of the Cooper River Bridge, later renamed the John P. Grace Bridge and eventually replaced in 2005 by the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Averaging more than 75,000 vehicles a day in traffic, the Ravenel Bridge — which celebrates its 15th anniversary on July 16 — was the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and the tallest structure in the state at the time. And the rest, as they say, is history. The design of this building on the corner of Hibben and Whilden Streets reflects the history of the trolley car barn that once stood there.
