Emily Johnston of Johnston Law Firm is one of those people with a penchant for service to her community. That’s why she’s combined an early passion for law with the natural desire to give back to her community and her family. “I wanted to help people. There are different ways to help people. I was the fourth of five children. I grew up in North Carolina. My father didn’t go to high school because he had to quit school to support his family. My dad wanted a lawyer in the family, so I was my dad’s chance for that. I knew early on that I wanted to go to law school or medical school,” stated Johnson. The interest was further sparked in fifth grade when she read a book about careers in law. Between her curiosity about law, her desire to help people and her father’s influence, law was a natural choice. Johnston has been a lawyer since 1985. Not only is she a lawyer, but she also has an MBA. “My dad was instrumental in my dual degree. He understood that a lawyer needed business sense. He was right. The MBA degree helped me understand the language of financial problems and valuation questions in divorce. In my practice, I have been able to use the tools I have from my MBA.” During the early years of her career, Johnston became the “go-to” for divorce cases. “I always did family court work because it was not glamorous work, and it was hard. There was not access to many divorce lawyers like we have today.” Achieving success, Johnston opened her own firm in 1997. With three small children of her own, she knew failure wasn’t an option. She has since grown her practice over time. Her approach is about a team effort. She relayed that her team is “well-trained and smart. They allow me time to do the thinking part of the job to research, write and strategize.” Johnston has never lost sight that what she does is about helping people through difficult times. That spark of interest ignited in elementary school has transformed her into the competent and caring advocate she is today. Johnston Law Firm cares about their clients as individuals, which is the most important part. The firm takes pride in giving their clients top-notch attention, understanding and professionalism during a difficult process that sometimes cannot be avoided. “We want the client to come out of this process a better person, even though they will now be only half of a family unit. We want them to be the best they can be — the best they can be toward their children. That’s important to me.” The Johnston Law Firm is for clients who want to be treated like more than another court case, like this is their life.
