11 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com There is always something that has a special meaning for me in each edition we publish. The same goes for our different podcasts. The theme for both this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine and the VOICE for Real Estate podcast is “beautiful homes,” and that makes both mediums special for the same reason. What is that reason? This is the only time of year we can compile and share with you our real estate data from the previous year. On the latest episode of VOICE for Real Estate, Doug Holmes — who’s been crunching MLS data for decades — and I take a trip around Charleston. We discuss the number of sales, the continued increase in pricing and the decrease of the number of homes sold in over a dozen towns in the greater Charleston area. I want to give a shoutout to our podcast sponsors, SouthState Bank and Schirmer Insurance Group, for helping make this possible. As with the podcast, this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine features extensive real estate information, including our “Top Ten Homes Sold” listings starting on page 69. It is about our homes inside and out — from the initial investment to the decorating and landscaping. You’ll find leading Realtors, builders, insurance companies, landscapers, pool builders and designers in our “Beautiful Homes” section starting on page 103. Though this issue focuses on homes, we feel one of our responsibilities as a community magazine is to highlight the people who enrich our community. In these pages we honored two such residents who just left us. Thomasena Stokes- Marshall was a fantastic person and exceptional leader who served Mount Pleasant in so many ways, beginning with her 17 years on town council. Mount Pleasant is richer and better because Thomasena was part of our community. Writer Mary Coy pens a tribute to Thomasena starting on page 29. Arthur Ravenel gave a lot to Mount Pleasant, Charleston and, of course, to everyone who crosses the Ravenel Bridge. I’m proud to have spent some time with Cousin Arthur, including taking his photo for the front cover of East Cooper Magazine, the predecessor of Mount Pleasant Magazine. If you’d like to read about my adventures with Arthur, the article starts on page 31. We appreciate you, our readers and our supporting marketing partners. We are so proud to serve our community. 13 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com editor’s note Beauty is everywhere in this issue. It’s found in the beautiful homes we’re featuring, in the outdoor articles ushering us into spring and in the personalities of prominent community leaders (Arthur Ravenel and Thomasena Stokes-Marshall) honored in this volume. As I began editing articles this time around, I noticed the pure ambiance of our area more than ever. Beauty is the reason we have all chosen this place. It’s good for the soul to be surrounded by things that are aesthetically pleasing. It’s why we have gardens. It’s why we have useless throw pillows on our couches, or hunks of pretty metal hanging around our necks. It’s why we’ve all chosen to live among the marshes, palmetto trees and sandy beaches. I think there must be a connection between the land and the personalities around here that shine so darn brightly. Somehow one affects the other, a symbiotic relationship. This issue journeys through all aspects of the things that make life in the Mount Pleasant area wonderful. We have featured architectural beauty, natural beauty and even scenic drives as we explore surrounding gems like the Hammock Coast. We have even curated books, wine and recipe sections to encourage a little more leisure in the lives of our readers. As you thumb through each section, I ask one thing of you. Take it all in. Consider stopping to read that book or take that suggested day trip. Enjoy this issue as your moment to stop and smell the newly blooming roses. Escape into the pages with us, then outside to see it in real life. Don’t just set this issue down and return to the stresses of everyday life. Use this one as a reminder to do something happy in the young spring sun. Appreciate the beauty that is the place you get to call home by enjoying it. -Lorna Hollifield Managing Editor MARCH/APRIL 2023 C A L E N D A R O F E V E N T S • B E A U T I F U L H O M E S • T H E H A M M O C K C O A S T A Second Serving of “Best Of” Winners Coming Right Up 2023 WWW.BESTOFMP.COM Tributes to our Late Leaders Farewell to Arthur and Thomasena Read More of Their Stories Taking it Outside Tennis, Trips and Tales from the Bridge YOUR COMMUNITY, YOUR MAGAZINE SCAN • CLICK SUBSCRIBE

This home is located at 104 Ocean Boulevard on Isle of Palms. You can access all of the island’s most expensive homes sold in 2022 on page 72. If you’re interested in accessing prices of properties dating back to 2017 for Isle of Palms, Wild Dunes, Sullivan’s Island and others, visit TopTenHomesSold.com. The featured home is conveniently located at the front of the island, with easy access to both Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island. This home was chosen as the cover photo because it perfectly represents the Lowcountry dream — water views, sunny days and enough space for everyone to enjoy. The listing and selling agents of 104 Ocean Boulevard have been known in the area for decades. They are both wellpracticed professionals who are extremely knowledgeable, ethical and passionate about the Lowcountry real estate landscape. Each have had multiple top ten listings appear in our magazine over the years, and we are proud to have them back. Katrina Johnson is the listing agent, and Charlie Aikman is the selling agent. Enjoy learning more about this house and others across East Cooper neighborhoods in our annual Beautiful Homes section. We hope your dreams are found inside. 17 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com social buzz The passing of Arthur Ravenel Jr., for which our beloved and iconic bridge is named, resounded through the community like a trumpet. When someone of such prestige, community influence and accomplishment passes, people have something to say about it. Even if they did not know him, Ravenel affected Charleston and Mount Pleasant residents — if only by the daily scenic trek over the bridge. One of our most commented-on posts ever, many community members took to social media to share their thoughts. Now we’d like to share some of those with our readers. “Such a wonderful man I had the privilege of meeting. I got to know himway back when I serviced his heating and cooling system. Rice and Santos heating and air. He was a wonderful person.” — John Gregory “My sincere condolences to the Ravenel family. True Southern gentlemen and force. His spirit inspired greatness in many citizens of South Carolina. Legendary impact for love of country.” — Linda Smith “Goodbye old Huguenot friend. 27 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com It doesn’t get much better than this: a great seafood dinner, a waterfront view, a stroll along the pier and a drink at a dockside bar. The scores of visitors at Shem Creek every night are testament to the fun and flavor that the iconic site — dotted with local haunts that spotlight all that was mentioned above — offers. However, it’s a far different scene than the one there some 50 years ago. Back then there was only one restaurant on the creek. That didn’t really matter because that one was an instant classic, and it was the Lorelei. There were no fish tacos, seafood towers or oyster sliders. There was no such thing in those days. Instead, the menu was basic local seafood, most everything fried, of course. The restaurant’s specialties, the fish stew and crab dip, came with every meal. That popular appetizer is the thing that kept everyone talking about it long after the visit. Shockingly, there was no outside dining — and not much of a view – just a few paned windows providing a glimpse of the shrimp boats passing through the creek. The real view was of a mural on the dining room wall entitled “The Song of the Lorelei,” depicting the mythical siren whose enchanting song lured homesick sailors into the ocean’s depths. The restaurant stood about where the Shem Creek Inn is now, boasting only 20 small tables draped with red-andwhite checkered tablecloths. It was a small concrete block structure built years earlier as a bunkhouse for fishermen whose boats were moored in the creek. None of the fishing charters, luxury yachts or kayak rentals that rest there today were part of the scene. The only watercraft on the creek were the dozens of shrimp trawlers, usually two or three abreast, at times numbering close to a hundred. The only visitors were folks coming to buy fresh seafood to cook at home. In fact, it was Mount Pleasant Seafood owners, Walter and Lillian Toler, who conceived the Lorelei Restaurant 15 years after opening their fish market. Local restaurateur Ronnie Boals purchased the establishment in 1970 and operated it for about 10 years, until it was demolished to make space for the hotel and another restaurant he built. Boals remembered, “The Lorelei was a quaint little place; it wasn’t big at all. It was one of my favorites of all the restaurants I owned over my 60 years in the business.” The parking lot was never crowded, but the abundance of parking didn’t mean the restaurant wasn’t packed. It was. After all, it was that good. Charleston native Roxanne LeaMond recalled, “The air was different then. Eating out was a special event. Today, it doesn’t have the same feel. The Lorelei was truly a localsonly place. And it was just good food.” Like the sweet song of the siren, the beloved Lorelei Seafood Restaurant has faded into what seems like a dream now, one that many old-timers still enjoy when lying down their heads at night. The African American Historic Settlements Commission. These are just a few fixtures that enhance the daily lives of Mount Pleasant residents, and they were all made possible through the dogged efforts of a woman who has been called “a guiding light” throughout the community. Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, the first (and only) African American to ever serve on the Mount Pleasant Town Council, died in January shortly before her 80th birthday. Stokes-Marshall was born in the Mount Pleasant community of Snowden and moved with her parents to New York City at a young age. While living there, her family often made trips to see relatives in the Lowcountry where she became immersed in the deep roots of the Gullah-Geechee culture. She graduated from New York University and enjoyed a 28-year career in law enforcement in the Big Apple. After her retirement, she moved into the same house in Snowden that she had lived in as a child, residing there until her death. 31 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com our town multiple awards from the NYPD, the Police Athletic League, many churches and hosts of civic clubs. During those years, she was involved in community organizing and identified the same need when she returned to her hometown, particularly in promoting awareness of the Gullah-Geechee culture and its relevance to the community. Stokes-Marshall had also served as the Bronx Borough President at one time. She brought those leadership skills with her to Mount Pleasant, where she witnessed the absence of minority representation on the Town Council. In 1996, she vied unsuccessfully for a seat, but undeterred, she ran again two years later and won, ultimately serving four consecutive terms. Former Mayor Billy Swails said, “I loved Thomasena. I was lucky enough to serve for three years with her on Town Council and then four as mayor. She was a great lady. She was persistent and did her homework. She was always ready and expected everyone else to be too. You could count on her.” Two other former Mount Pleasant mayors also reflected on Stokes-Marshall’s legacy. Linda Page explained that everyone in the town has been touched in some way by her contributions, adding that she didn’t bring up uncomfortable issues just to argue about them, but rather to solve them. Cheryll Woods-Flowers remembered Stokes-Marshall’s compassion, saying, “She led with her heart.” Gary Santos served his first 15 years on Town Council with Stokes-Marshall and admired her candor. “There were no holds barred. She always told you the truth rather than telling you what you might want to hear. You could take it or leave it. She was tough but fair and would ask a lot of questions. She was also fun to work with and you knew where you stood with her,” Santos acknowledged. He added that the two also served together on the board of the Mount Pleasant Senior Center, which has received awards due in large part to Stokes-Marshall’s tenacity and ideas. “She put a lot into it,” he said. Jackie Gore, a lifelong resident of Scanlonville, described Stokes-Marshall as humble. “She spoke softly and knew her audience. She encouraged people to get involved in the town’s projects to better the quality of life of its residents and got me involved with the committee working on affordable housing.” After retiring from town council, Stokes-Marshall immersed herself in the African American Historic Settlements Commission, a group which she co-founded. Michael Allen, a retired community partnership specialist with the National Park Service, would often sit at Stokes-Marshall’s kitchen table hammering out plans to garner support and bring attention to the pressing needs of fairness and respect for the GullahGeechee community. Allen hopes a younger generation will carry on her work. As part of her initiative to shed light on the GullahGeechee culture, Stokes-Marshall became involved with the College of Charleston in the production of “Bin Yah: There’s No Place Like Home,” a film focusing on the plight of African American historic settlement communities and the loss of their cultural identity to modern development. She founded a summer camp for youth to learn and propagate the art of sweetgrass basketry and helped establish the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association. Stokes-Marshall also worked with the National Park Service and the South Carolina Arts Commission on the documentary, “Grass Roots: The Enduring Art of the Lowcountry Basket.” In 2006, the art form was named the South Carolina Official Art Craft in part due to her efforts. Stokes-Marshall’s life was devoted to helping people and giving voice to those who have none. Her many contributions to the Mount Pleasant community during her 17 years on Town Council bettered the lives of people of different ages and races. Even after her time in elected office, Stokes-Marshall remained involved in community affairs and organizations such as Affordable Housing for All, Habitat for Humanity and MUSC’s Senior Mentor Program. She achieved numerous accolades but stated she was most proud of becoming the first Black person to serve on Mount Pleasant Town Council. The residents of Mount Pleasant continue to reap the many fruits of her labor, fruits with endless shelf-life. Photo prov i ded by Gar y Santos .
