59 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com your partner is a picky sleeper, consider a blow-up camping mat or pool raft – the hospital bench beds aren’t known for comfort, and rest will matter for both of you. Feeding your baby is also part of those early hours. If your milk hasn’t come in yet, don’t be afraid to supplement with formula. A fed baby is a calm baby, and a calmer baby means a more grounded, rested you. There’s no gold medal for doing it the hardest way. One thing you should not skimp on is ice pack pads. Use them generously. Managing swelling early makes a significant difference in your recovery and comfort in those first days. Throw in witch hazel foam and witch hazel pad liners if you want even more relief. AFTER BIRTH: TRUST YOURSELF AND TAKE IT MOMENT BY MOMENT Coming home with your baby is a transition unlike any other. The best thing you can do is keep an open mind. There is no single “right” way to do this. Trust your instincts; they are stronger than you think. You may find yourself crying unexpectedly. Let it happen. Those emotions are part of your body’s healing process. You’ve just done something extraordinary, and your body is working hard to recover and regulate. Listen to it. Rest when you can. Eat when you’re hungry. Ask for help when you need it. Feeding – especially breastfeeding – can be one of the most challenging parts. It’s common to feel like you’re on a rollercoaster: one moment ready to quit, the next determined to make it work at all costs. If you need to supplement with formula, do it without guilt. It can bring peace of mind, help ensure your baby is getting enough nutrition (including vitamin D) and even support issues like jaundice. A supported, less stressed mom is always better for the baby. Continue to protect your space. Keep your circle small until you feel ready to expand it. This isn’t about shutting people out; it’s about giving yourself the space to adjust without added pressure. If you’re in a relationship, know that it may be tested. Sleep deprivation and new responsibilities can create tension. Take advantage of quiet moments together. Communicate. Apologize when needed. And when emotions run high, pause. A breath can make all the difference. Remind yourself often: take it one day at a time. If that feels like too much, take it one minute at a time. What feels endless right now will one day feel like it passed in a blink. Finally, find a pediatrician you truly trust. Doing your research ahead of time can eliminate so much anxiety in those early weeks. Don’t hesitate to reach out for postpartum support, whether that’s your doctor, a lactation consultant or a mental health professional. Be honest about how you’re feeling. You don’t have to carry it all alone. This season is raw, beautiful, exhausting and fleeting. Give yourself grace through all of it. family WWW.BIGBADBREAKFAST.COM WHERE WE TREAT LOCALS LIKE ROCKSTARS AND ROCKSTARS LIKE LOCALS (843) 936-8854 2664 N Hwy 17 Suite 101 Mt. pleasant | 29466 SERVING BREAKFAST, BRUNCH & LUNCH 7 DAYS A WEEK!
