Bishop England’s baseball team (Class AAA) and First Baptist School’s football team (Class AA) both claimed their respective state championship titles this past academic year, and each for the second year in a row. Both schools can attest to the fact that the road to the top is rarely an easy one. Bishop England’s head baseball coach, Mike Darnell, entered this season knowing that his Battling Bishops were not only up against a mountain of expectations from By Anne Shuler Toole others but also had high expectations for themselves. His senior-heavy team had tasted state victory the previous year as juniors and were bound and determined for a repeat performance. “To accomplish what we did with all of the expectations was pretty special,” Darnell said with a smile. The team finished their season with a 31-2 record, defeating Seneca High School for the AAA state championship crown – the same opponents the Bishops had beaten for the title the previous season. For outfielder and catcher John Michel, a senior who had been on the team since the 8th grade, the two state championships leave a legacy for the upcoming team.
