I was just glad to be part of it,” he said. “Other than the state championships, the International Paper tournaments have been a lot of fun. Winning the Lower State Championship last year after a grueling 14 innings when Matthew McManus squeeze bunted to win and also winning on Seneca’s field this year – because we lost a game there last year in the championship series – those have been some of the best memories.” Pitcher Geoffrey Gilbert appreciated that the entire team stepped in to do their part. “It was harder winning the state championship because we didn’t know what it was like. The next year, we knew. We all wanted it again, and we had a goal,” he said. Darnell credits his team for being “complete” in all aspects of the game. “Our biggest strength was that we had no particular strength,” he pointed out. “We pitched extremely well all year long. If you pitch and play defense, you’ve always got a chance. We were able to grind out some wins with simply good pitching and defense.” Michel and Gilbert agreed that the team’s strong bond and each player’s ability to step up to the plate to do his part was a big reason they made it to the top two years in a row. “Over the last five years, my closest friends are the guys that I’ve played baseball with – we’re like a family, and that right there was one of our strongest driving forces,” Michel added.
