They have come a long way from an eight-man team accustomed to zero-win or one-win seasons just a few years back. Waters asked the team to stick with him four years ago when he started coaching the Hurricanes and was able to guide them from an 0-10 season his first year, to the first round of the playoffs his second year. They capped it off the past two years with state titles. “They all wanted it; they just didn’t know how to do it,” Waters explained. “At the end of the day, they bought into the program so that everyone was on the same page: the players, the parents, the school, the administration. Everybody wanted it, and they put their feet out there in the water, and they were able to walk.” The Hurricanes put in a lot of effort not only during the season but in workouts and over the summers as well. “We came together as a team, and we didn’t really know each other that well before,” said senior middle linebacker Timmy Campbell. “Now we enjoy our brotherhood – we have each other’s backs ‘til the end, and we’re really proud of what we accomplished in two years.” Waters credited a loss against a good team in a kickoff classic in Alabama last year as the ignition that spurred his team to bond and catapulted them to the state championship. “The key this year, compared to last year, was that the kids never played down to the competition. They played to their standards, which was a really key thing for us,” Waters said. This year, First Baptist will move up to Class AAA, and, while they’ll be playing tough teams every Friday, Waters believes they have a chance to be in the mix again. “Winning two state championships is a great feeling,” said running back Michel Dukes, a rising senior. “All the work we put in is paying off, and now we just have to put even more in to make it three years in a row.” Though the idiom says that good things come in twos, there is also a saying that good things come in threes, and perhaps these teams have it in them to raise the bar even higher. Until then, hats off to the Bishop England baseball team and First Baptist School football team for bringing the state titles home to Charleston two years in a row.
