So what does a typical day consist of for the
Gaillard Center’s director of external affairs? A little
bit of everything, according to Carlon. Matters such as
obtaining sponsorships, implementing marketing plans
and generating revenue are all fair game – anything on
the “business side,” he said. But it’s
clear from a chat with Carlon that
establishing relationships is what he
loves most about his new job.
“We’ve all developed a good
rapport with all the big events in
Charleston,” he pointed out. “Events
such as the Southeastern Wildlife Expo,
Spoleto Festival USA, DIG South
and others. We’re also home for the
Charleston Symphony Orchestra. This
is a wonderful, world-class venue for
Lowcountry events.”
I was lucky to tour the entire
Gaillard Center with Carlon as
my guide. I sat everywhere inside
the Martha and John M. Rivers
Performance Hall: the orchestra seats,
right by the stage; the box tier seats,
offering a flavor of exclusivity; the dress
circle, which was my personal favorite:
Even though they were high up, I didn’t
feel my usual fear of heights, thanks to
awesome engineering; and the gallery
seats, offering breathtaking scope of
the entire performance hall. In other
words, there’s not a bad seat in the
house at the Gaillard Center. Not to
mention the elegant lobbies and hallways, with their high
ceilings and beautiful natural light, which make a person
feel like royalty.
But don’t simply take it from me – book tickets to see a
show there and you’ll understand for yourself.
