W

ith so many trends, such as barre, spinning

and CrossFit, sweeping the workout

world, it’s hard to know which fitness

practice is right for you. Want a workout

that will leave you strong and energized? Coastal Rowing

Studio delivers a series of options regardless of your athletic

ability. The first studio of its kind in the Lowcountry, this

family-run business has caught the attention of residents

looking to embrace their greatest selves. Whether you are

training for a marathon or simply want to look your best

poolside, these professionals have just what you need to up

your heart rate and your confidence.

“We wanted to provide something different from what is

currently offered in the fitness market,” said co-owner Brian

Provost, who owns Coastal Rowing Studio with his wife

Cheryl. “Indoor rowing is an exercise that most anyone can

do. We love the idea of being able to build a community of

different ages and fitness levels who encourage and challenge

each other to be the best they can be.”

A visit to Coastal Rowing Studio is sure to be impactful,

as the sessions offered target a variety of areas at once.

Unlike a treadmill or stationary bike, a rowing machine

achieves a total body workout within a relatively short

amount of time. Class participants row together, in unison,

as if they are in the same boat gliding down a waterway.

“A workout on the indoor rowing machine is a

complete workout,” said Cheryl Provost. “In one rowing

stroke, you engage your legs, abdominals, back and arms,

working 85 percent of the muscles in your body and

building your cardio endurance at the same time. It is

great for toning, building strength and losing weight.”

Cheryl, who comes from a background of nutrition

and personal training, finds joy in working one-on-one

with clients to achieve amazing results. Even in a class

setting, participants receive the attention needed to get

them to the next level. From dispensing knowledge on

what food is the ideal source to fuel a workout to helping

folks increase their stamina, she revels in watching the

transformations of clients.

“For me, the most rewarding moment occurs when

a client lights up as they realize that indoor rowing is

helping them accomplish their health and fitness goals,”

said Cheryl. “Whether it’s feeling better, losing

weight or lowering your pace on the erg, there

is something special and humbling in knowing

you have had a part in helping someone else.”

In addition to helping clients achieve

optimal health, the Provosts flex their altruistic

muscle by donating to various charities.

“Rowing wars” are held each quarter, with

proceeds going to organizations that support

those battling illnesses such as cancer, heart

disease, autism and PTSD.

“From the moment someone enters our

studio, we want them to feel as if they are

part of the Coastal Rowing Studio crew,” said

Cheryl. “We strive to create a Lowcountry

community where our clients feel welcome and

know they matter. It is by developing these relationships

that we can truly encourage and challenge them.”

Burn calories and embrace your inner Olympian at
