H
appy new year, y’all! welcome to our beloved
Best of Mount Pleasant issue. We’re lucky to start the year off this
way – listing the restaurants, bars, retail shops, salons, services,
physicians and outdoor spaces that make East of the Cooper an
outstanding place to live. In other words, instead of pondering
how to make things better in the new year, we get to celebrate how
fabulous things already are.
Speaking of celebrations, our foldout cover for the Best of Mount Pleasant issue had
all of us raising a toast. It was truly a group effort. My appreciation goes to Jenn Cady,
our senior photographer; Dana, our art director; Ginger and Brandon, our loyal team
members; Bill, our energetic publisher; and the helpful folks at Vanity Salon, Harbor-
side East and GDC Home. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Don’t our cover stars look extraordinary? These first place winners are, left to right: Jack Little of East Cooper Commu-
nity Outreach; Brooke Ryan of Mix 96; Rob Fowler of WCBD News 2; Dr. Jack Hensel of Lowcountry Plastic Surgery; Dr.
John Knepper of Sewee Family Medicine; Michele Hensel of Lowcountry Beauty and Wellness Spa; Jason and Keenan Harn
of Loy Harn Jewelers; Chrissie and Willie Hopkins of East Cooper Auto Pros; Dr. Margarita Murphy of Colon Surgeons of
Charleston; Josh Atkinson of Atkinson Pools and Spas; and Wes Sellew of Mortgage Network. What a crew!
Elsewhere in this issue are even more reasons to celebrate Mount Pleasant, including the feature Brian and I wrote about
our favorite indie coffee spots; Jake Lucas’ story on local craft beer; Bill Farley’s scoop on the Billy Swails Parkway; Natalie
Hauff’s story about the legacy of Edmund Jenkins – plus much more.
Now, just for a moment, forget about your resolutions and give yourselves a pat on the back. Because I think we all
make up the Best of Mount Pleasant, dear readers – from our leaders and business owners to the scenery and residents,
we each do a part in making East Cooper an epic place. I hope you’ll read through this issue and agree with me.
Until the days lengthen and spring is here, enjoy the issue – and happy 2016!
Yours,
Denise K. James
