time to go home. It’s tedious but fulfilling.”

The analysis even included visits from CALEA

assessors, who were impressed by the department’s social

media outreach and community involvement, according

to Googe.

Googe embraces the idea that knowledge is power,

which is why he’s worked so hard to create a high

standard of service online. The department has more

than 14,000 followers on Twitter and more than 3,000

on Facebook. Questions on social media pour in at all

hours of the day and night, on subjects ranging from

traffic accidents to road closures. Googe has some help,

including six patrol officers who rotate to assist him in

fielding questions and keeping the community informed.

“We were doing it to get the community involved,

and it wasn’t something I was expecting to take off as it

did,” said Googe.

During the recent historic flooding, Googe posted

photos of flooded roadways, lists of road closures and

answered questioned posted on Twitter throughout the

several days of rain. Members of the local community

expressed their gratitude.

“Thanks so much and thanks for your service,” said one

follower on Twitter. “Thanks for the quick response, too!!”

ABC News 4 New Media Manager Sam Tyson, who

handles social media for the local television station,

praised Mount Pleasant’s dedication online.

“They are probably one of the best law enforcement

agencies on social media, especially where it matters

most, on Twitter,” said Tyson. “They get the information

out really quickly and are very responsive.”

According to a 2014 survey of 600 law enforcement

agencies by the International Association of Chiefs of

Police, 95 percent of agencies use social media and 55

percent of those not using social media are considering

it. The study also showed more than three quarters of

agencies believed social media had improved police/

community relations.

“I think they are more responsive to the community

they serve. I think the community has a greater

understanding of what they are doing,” said Tyson. “I

think every police agency in the country will have to be

more aggressive in their social media campaign because

it’s just where everyone is right now. The people are going

straight to the police agencies and wanting information

immediately. And that’s not going to change.”
