I’m so over the top about this issue.
Take, for instance, Brian Sherman’s interview with Joe Riley. Why
would Mount Pleasant Magazine write about Charleston’s beloved
longtime mayor? That was the question we asked when we first discussed
the possibility of talking with Riley. Here’s the answer we came up with: Why
not look into how well he worked with Mount Pleasant’s mayors over the past
four decades? In Joe’s early years in office, Mount Pleasant Mayor Johnnie
Dodds was one of his mentors. This is a must read. Thanks, Brian.
This issue is packed full of good things going on in Mount Pleasant. You’ll
meet East Cooper Hospital’s new CEO, Patrick Downes, and tour some of
Mount Pleasant’s public schools, thanks to Editor Denise K. James. The list
goes on. And on. And on.
Our new contributing writer, Diane Pauldine, interviewed well-known
local architect SamHerin. His hard work and talent went into our newTownHall. She
also interviewedDennis Knight ofWhole Building Systems andMarkUyak of DWG
Consulting Engineers, two important contributors to the highly-anticipated project.
Life has a funny way of coming full circle. In 1979, when I first moved East
of the Cooper, I worked for Diane’s parents, Charles and Patricia Diggle, who
published the Moultrie News. Years later, they sold it to The Post and Courier.
Now that’s a small-world story.
We really care about our town and about our new Town Hall. For the first
time ever, all Mount Pleasant’s departments and services are under one roof.
When you read our articles about Project Manager Brooks Blumenthal and
about McKnight Construction, you’ll understand why Town Administrator Eric
DeMoura and his staff chose them to build the town’s 92,000-square-foot new

In 1989, I was publishing several publications, including East Cooper
Magazine. On Sept. 21, when Hurricane Hugo slammed into our shoreline, we
documented the devastation and the effects this Category 5 hurricane had on
our community.
With the 2017 Hurricane season underway, Kalene McCort interviewed
my longtime friends and local meteorologists Rob Fowler of WCBD 2 and
Bill Walsh of WCSC 5. To the best of my knowledge, Rob and Bill are the
only local meteorologists still in Charleston who were here when Hugo paid us
a brief but destructive visit. You can access the digital version of this 76-page
