R

emember the game of school – similar to house

– that we all used to play as children? One of

us would take on the role of “teacher” and one

of us, or several of us, would be the “students.”

And later on, after a snack or a bike ride or even the next

day, we’d inevitably play again, but this time the roles

would be switched around. Someone else would be the

teacher and someone else would be the student. Funny,

isn’t it, how the process of learning in adulthood is similar

to this childhood game? The roles of giving and receiving

knowledge are always changing – and the venue is not

always inside a classroom.

The cover of our July/

August issue shows exactly

what I mean. Check out

local kid Wyatt Deaton

enjoying the waves in this

summery photo by Krysta

Chapman. He’s part of

a larger crew of surfing

youngsters who learn from

older friends or family –

then turn around and show

someone else how to do

it. Read more in Krysta’s

feature story on page 28.

Elsewhere in our Education issue, you’ll learn more

about former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley’s friendship

with Mount Pleasant’s mayors over the years; weather

patterns and hurricane tips to keep in mind this summer;

the history of some of the public schools in East Cooper;

how Wando High

School puts its

literary magazine

together; a new

community art

gallery in town; and

much more. This is

also the issue with

our Independent

School Directory,

our new MP Pets

supplement and

Smiling Faces, our

dental supplement!

Whew – a lot to

read on these long,

sunny days!

Speaking of teaching and learning, one of my favorite

parts of my job is working with my editorial interns.

Even though I’m the one in charge, they always manage

to teach me a thing or two. It’s a good reminder, I think,

to keep an open mind to those you never expected to

learn from. Once we graduate from the classroom into

what I like to call the school of life, everyone’s got a

lesson to share.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, y’all.

Yours,

Denise K. James
