business acumen were the catalyst
for creating the largest commercial
shipyard on the East Coast is more
passionate about helping others than
he is about his accomplishments in
the business world.
A Mount Pleasant resident since 1973, D. Loy Stewart
was at the helm of Detyens Shipyards, Inc. until 2004,
when he turned the day-to-day operations of the company
over to his son, Loy Jr. Now serving as chairman of the
board, at the age of 68, he still shows up for work every
day, and he still strives to make life a little easier and a little
more fun for his employees, his customers and the many
other people whose lives he has touched.
Stewart was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Scle-
rosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2002,
and the debilitating disease has stolen his ability to walk
and greatly diminished his capacity to speak. It has not,
