INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
within because they are not worrying as much about what
they look like on the outside.”
Despite their prevalence in U.S. school systems, many
schools have chosen to refrain from establishing a school
uniform, fearing that they will impose on each student’s
sense of individuality. Many believe that learning to
appropriately dress themselves at a young age will prepare
them for their futures. Erik Kreutner, head of school at
Mason Preparatory School in Charleston, pointed out:
“Part of our mission is to cultivate respect, integrity and
personal responsibility in our students. We believe that part
of developing personal responsibility is having our students
choose clothing for school that is appropriate and conforms
to our school dress code while also allowing them to express
their individuality. Most of our students will not go on to
wear daily uniforms in their adult lives and will need to
dress themselves appropriately for their career. By requiring
our students to wear school-branded uniforms on some days
and non-uniform clothing on others, we believe we provide
our families with a nice balance.”
The school uniform trend seems to be a rather
permanent aspect of our educational system. The traditional,
conservative outfits are indicative of an academic setting
and will most likely remain. As fashion and culture have
changed and evolved, the basic pieces of the school uniform
have stayed the same nationwide.
School uniforms are still a highly debated topic amongst
adults, but how do the children feel about them? After
all, they are the ones who are directly affected. Rising
eighth grader at Christ Our King School, Hannah Lewis,
commented: “Uniforms designate equality throughout
Christ Our King-Stella Maris School. When every student
has matching uniforms, students can be closer to forming
a tight bond and relating to each other more. They prevent
bullying throughout our school because there is almost no
judging. Students can focus more on the real purpose for
school, which is learning, instead of focusing on whose
outfit is better looking.”
