INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

In theWar Against Cybercrime

THE CITADEL

T

he Citadel is fighting a war – not on a battlefield

but in cyberspace. The military school is offering

an undergraduate minor in Cybersecurity, as well

as a graduate certificate – offered jointly with the College of

Charleston – in Cybersecurity.

The Citadel has been designated as a National Center of

Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the

National Security Agency and the

Department of Homeland Security.

Fighting cybercrime has become crucial because in

many ways, our lives depend on the internet. We may work

remotely, order groceries from the comfort of our couch and

even skip the line at our favorite coffee shop through an app.

What price do we pay for all this? The more online activity,

the greater chance of a cyberattack.

There is an immediate need for cybersecurity workforce

development in the Lowcountry. Major employers in the

Charleston region are interested in hiring employees who

specialize in this field.

Upon completion of this program, students will be well-

prepared to pursue a wide variety of jobs in the cybersecurity

field, including: information security analyst; information

security engineer; systems vulnerability analyst; and

information security manager. The demand for cybersecurity

workers is greater than what local colleges and universities

are producing.

“We cannot solve the problem of cybersecurity

overnight,” said Shankar Banik, PhD, associate

professor and co-director of The Citadel Center for Cyber,

Intelligence and Security Studies. “The best strategy will

be to manage this problem efficiently by developing the

cybersecurity workforce to meet the challenges and demands

and by creating cybersecurity awareness to educate users

about cyber safety and ethics.”
