primary cultural influencers of our

children. We are able to know where

they need extra help and how to

achieve the desired results,” Doll said.

Now, with three other children:

Andrew, 12; Jonathan, 8; and

Timothy, 4; all four children are

active participants in band, choir

and Kindermusik programs offered

through the Arts Academy.

For others, like the Young Family,

the desire to play an active role in their

children’s education and their Christian

faith made it a clear decision to home

school their seven children.

“We wanted to be together as a

family and for us as their parents to

be their main influencers of character

and moral training,” said Julie Young.

With their backgrounds in

chemistry and finance, Rich and

Julie Young are able to provide the

level of training necessary not only

for their kids but also for those in

their community. Working in a co-op

structure, the Young family is just

one of roughly six that get together

to teach various educational classes to

the kids.

But when it is time to put down

the books and pick up an instrument,

they outsource that type of education

to the band, choir, guitar classes

and Kindermusik, which the Arts

Academy at ECBC offers, and

programs such as the East Cooper

Homeschool Band – ECHo – with

Mike Doll. The Young kids, ranging

in age from 4 to 19, cover just about

all the instruments these classes have

to offer. From the flute to trumpet

to piano, cello, sax, oboe, violin and

even the viola – these kids are their

very own music machines.

Playing with ECHo is just the

beginning for some of these kids, who

are then able to audition for larger bands

and orchestras throughout the state.

“There are only six or so home-

school bands in South Carolina,” Doll

said. “If we didn’t have home-school

bands, many of these kids would not

have the opportunity to be part of

a musical ensemble. Through their

participation in band, they can also

audition for groups like the Region 4

Honor Band and the South Carolina

All-State Bands.”

Some of the Young kids are

doing just that. Ellen, a sophomore

at Charleston Southern University,

played with the Charleston Symphony

Youth Orchestra for two years, while

Logan, a freshman in high school, has

already been seated fourth chair in

the South Carolina Junior All-State

Band. Abigail, Caleb and Rebekah

have each earned seats in the Region

4 Honor Band. In addition, Abigail

and Andrew have been selected for

the ACDA SC All-State choirs this

fall. Caleb has also auditioned for

and earned a spot on the Seacoast

WorshipTeam. While an audition
