INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

Four Pillars to Success

CHARLESTON COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

S

ince 1970, Charleston Collegiate has upheld its

mission to inspire its students to become passionate,

lifelong learners. Faculty members strive to develop

every aspect of their students’ lives,

from the campus to the community,

through what the school calls its Four Pillars of Education.

The first pillar, Project-Based Learning, is used to

explore real-world problems and challenges through

creative thinking and problem solving. This is present

throughout the school, from elementary students writing

business proposals for selling garden produce at the farmers

market to high schoolers connecting their life with a poem

written centuries ago. Project-Based Learning helps the

students of Charleston Collegiate understand the world and

their purpose within it.

The second pillar, Creativity and the Arts, helps all

students, preschool through 12th grade, reach a deeper

understanding of their subject matter by utilizing “cross-

curricular learning” and incorporating fine arts into all

other academic courses and projects.

Thirdly, Charleston Collegiate believes in the importance

of teaching students leadership through outdoor education.

CCS takes full advantage of its 30-acre campus with an

Outdoor Leadership Education Center, complete with a

tidal swamp dock for studying the local ecology, a kayak

program that educates students fourth grade and up about

the rich, local history and a ropes course to help students

understand their roles as leaders in the community.

The fourth pillar that Charleston Collegiate strives

to ingrain into its students is Financial Literacy

and Entrepreneurship. By exposing students to the

fundamentals of personal finance and business planning

from as early as second grade, the school prepares students

for their futures by evoking an entrepreneurial spirit from a

young age.
